I wrote my first public R package loggit a few years ago, which is a JSON logger for R. Since that initial release, I've learned a great deal about what makes a good (and bad/frustrating) logging experience with any software: loggers should be fast, lightweight, structured, ideally effortless to use, and machine-readable as well as human-readable. I learned a bit of biostatistics but never how to work in R for phylogenetic analysis.
